California is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
After a quarter-century span, not a single part of California is enduring drought conditions. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened wildfire risks and challenged its huge agribusiness.
An Update Indicates No Drought
Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor illustrated that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This change resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that topped up key lakes like Shasta and Oroville well above their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.
From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations
Achieving this status involved intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, resulting in extensive inundation, power outages, and deaths. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.
As late as late December, areas like Modoc County were considered experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 finally erased those remaining dry spots.
A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge
Yet, authorities caution that the end of drought status is not the same as complete water security. Latest data of the high-elevation snow indicate it is only about 70% of the historical norm.
This snowpack, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for the year ahead. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is not yet time to make predictions for the months ahead.
“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this precious water balance for the months to come.
