European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
