Heat and Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins Following Player Arrests
Miami put up 86 opening half points against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat claimed a crushing 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since player Terry Rozier was detained over alleged illegal gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained as part of a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. The two individuals deny the claims.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."
Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces this."
The Trail Blazers also won their initial match since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
